Somewhere on a back road in Australia this weekend, a loaf of sourdough is sitting in a repurposed fridge with a tin beside it. No shop assistant, no queue, no opening hours worth mentioning beyond “until sold out”. That’s the roadside bakery stall, and it’s quietly become one of the best reasons to take the long way home.
Roadside bakery stands sit somewhere between a farm gate stall and a micro-bakery. Most are run by one person or one family, baking from a home or farm kitchen, and selling through an honesty box, a QR code or a tap-and-go reader. The stock changes daily, the good stuff goes early, and what you’ll find depends on who’s baking and what came out of the oven that morning.
We have 25 roadside stalls listing baked goods in the directory right now, from French pastries in Tasmania’s Huon Valley to coeliac-safe cupcakes on Queensland’s Darling Downs. Here’s where they are, what they bake, and how to make the most of them.
At a glance: 25 bakery stalls across Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Expect sourdough, focaccia, pies, French pastries and sweet treats. Most open on set days and close when sold out, so go early and check the stall’s socials first.
Why roadside bakery stalls are having a moment
A few things have come together. Home sourdough baking took off and never really stopped, and a lot of people who got good at it found themselves with more loaves than they could eat. At the same time, cashless payment made the unattended stall far more workable: a QR code or a card reader means you’re no longer relying on travellers carrying coins.
And bakers like the model. There’s no shopfront rent and no fixed hours. Bake what you can, put it out, and close the door when it’s gone. For buyers, it means bread and cakes made in small batches by someone who lives up the road, at prices that usually undercut the café in town.
What you'll find at a roadside bakery stand
Every stall is different, but across our listings the same favourites keep turning up:
- Sourdough and bread – naturally leavened loaves, focaccia and, on Bruny Island, bread baked fresh twice a day.
- Sweet treats – brownies, slices, cupcakes, loaded cookies and cake pops, often in small, ever-changing batches.
- Pies and pastries – from apple pies and blueberry pies to proper French viennoiserie.
- Pantry extras – jams, chutneys, pickles, pesto and preserves that pair with whatever you’ve just bought.
- Dietary options – some stalls bake gluten-free ranges, and at least one runs a coeliac-safe licensed kitchen.
Many bakery stalls also sell eggs, vegetables, honey or flowers, so one stop can cover a lot of the weekly shop.
Tasmania: the Huon Valley bake trail
Tasmania has more roadside bakery stalls in our directory than any other state, and most of them cluster in the south. Grove, Franklin, Glen Huon and Geeveston sit within a short drive of each other in the Huon Valley, which makes for an excellent Saturday morning loop out of Hobart. Bring a basket and leave early.
Paradise Regained, Glen Huon – Freshly baked French pastries, open Friday to Sunday from 7.30am until sold out. If you’re doing the Huon loop, start here.
CRMB Treats – Treat Stand, Grove – A pink-and-white self-serve stand loaded with cookies, cake pops and brownies. Open Saturdays from 9am and most Sundays from 9.30am, and it sells out most weekends.
Whispering Spirit Farm Produce, Franklin – Apple pies and home-baked goodies alongside fruit, veg, preserves, sorbet and juice. Very Huon Valley.
The Little Black Shed and Little Black Fridge, Geeveston – Two stalls in Tasmania’s far south. The Shed carries seasonal preserves, baked goods and small-batch pantry treats made from homegrown and local produce; the Fridge keeps it simple with cookies, cakes and bread.
Bruny Bread Fridge, Alonnah (Bruny Island) – Bread baked fresh twice a day, plus biscuits and, unexpectedly, fridge magnets. Worth timing your ferry around.
Little Food Shop, Westerway – Up the Derwent Valley on the road to Mount Field, a refrigerated stall of cakes, slices, take-home meals, free-range eggs, jams and chemical-free garden produce.
Cakes by Elise, Oakdowns – A brightly coloured shed with small, ever-changing bakes: brownies, cupcakes and slices. Opening days vary, so check social media first.
Simply Homemade by Kim, Bracknell – Focaccia, giant cookies, slices, cakes and jams in the state’s north. Open dates are posted on Facebook.
South Australia: Adelaide Hills sourdough and beyond
South Australia’s bakery stalls lean towards the Adelaide Hills and the wine regions around them, so it’s easy to pair a loaf with a cellar door visit.
The Little Porch Pantry, Mount Barker – A porch stall with baked goods, sourdough and pantry and fridge staples. Handy for the Hills commute.
The Butchers Pantry, Woodside – Started as a way to share surplus produce and grew into a weekly stall of baked items, home-cooked meals and seasonal produce from their own place and the neighbours’.
Googies & Greens, Langhorne Creek – Fresh breads and focaccias, homemade pesto, eggs, vegetables, flowers and honey. Open seven days, 8am to 8pm, which is rare for a bakery stall.
Eden Valley Farmstand, Eden Valley – Two families growing chemical-free food and sharing the excess: duck and chicken eggs, fruit and veg, preserves, flowers and, sometimes, baking.
Home Made on the Tce, Crystal Brook – Home baking alongside craft, sewing, embroidery and plants in the state’s Mid North.
The Pink Fridge, Stokes Bay (Kangaroo Island) – A restored 1950s fridge painted pink, filled with snacks and treasures with a Kangaroo Island story. Different every day.
Queensland: from the Gold Coast hinterland to the Granite Belt
The Crumb Shelf, Tallai – Homemade sourdough made with a wild-fermented starter, baked goods and a shelf of books, tucked among the trees in the Gold Coast hinterland. Stock varies, which is half the fun.
Bakery Farm Stand, Cunningham – Cupcakes, cookies, brownies, slices, jams, pickles and chutney, with a big gluten-free range made in a coeliac-safe, food-licensed kitchen. Also local fruit and veg, honey and apple juice.
Frosty Blues Blueberry, Dalveen – A lot more than blueberries: pies, limes and jams too. A good stop on the New England Highway through the Granite Belt.
Green Haven Stall, Wamuran – A family-owned stall with a long history, fresh fruit and veg, plants, and a growing range of things made on the property.
New South Wales and Victoria
Megs Farm Shop, Tabbil Creek (Dungog) – A pastry chef and an organic horticulturist running a slow-living farm shop. Fresh pastries and wholefoods every Friday from 8.30am until sold out, plus some Saturdays.
The Black Shack Pantry, Helensburgh – Sonia and Jacko’s roadside pantry, stocked with handmade food and produce from their family farm near Crookwell. A handy stop just south of Sydney.
Little Cargo Pantry, Cargo – Artisan sourdough and baked goods with fresh produce, cut flowers, crafts and free-range eggs in the Central West.
The Stall – Numinbah, Chillingham – This one has everything: flowers, herbs, baked goods, sandwiches, fruit and veg. The homemade sweet chilli sauce is a winner.
Farm Stand at Condong, Condong – A lovely stand in the Tweed that may face closure over council requirements. Visit while you can.
Tallowwood Flower Farm, Chiltern (Victoria) – An acre of flowers and produce, with seasonal fruit and veg, eggs, jams, sauces and gifts at the stall.
Tips for buying from a roadside bakery stall
- Go early. “Until sold out” means exactly that. At the popular stalls the best loaves are gone by mid-morning.
- Check socials before a long drive. Many home bakers open on set days only, and post their bake days on Facebook or Instagram.
- Carry a way to pay. Some stalls take cash only, others a QR code or bank transfer. Having both covers you.
- Bring a bag and a cool box. A cloth bag keeps bread crusty; a cooler keeps cream cakes and fridge items safe on a warm day.
- Ask about allergens. Home bakes aren’t always labelled in detail. If you have an allergy, contact the stall first.
- Respect the honesty box. These stalls run on trust. Pay the marked price and close the fridge door behind you.
Do you run a bakery stall?
If you sell bread, cakes or pastries from your gate, add your stall to The Roadside Stalls. It’s free, and it puts you in front of people actively looking for something homemade on their next drive. Tick Baked Goods so you appear in the list below.
